The end of the 2006/07 season and the start of summer has brought one or two ratings wins to Global, though the spate of high-profile finales has so far played out better for CTV.
Grey’s Anatomy, CSI and ER ended their seasons on Thursday, May 17, a strong night for CTV that saw Grey’s air a 75-minute finale at 7:45 p.m. ET to 1.8 million viewers, besting the last ep of the season of Global’s The Office with 531,000 viewers.
CSI, still the show to beat in Canada, followed with 3 million according to BBM Nielsen, leading into ER which bowed out at 10 p.m. ET with a strong 1.7 million.
This week, Global hit Heroes generated 722,000 viewers for its finale on Victoria Day Monday at 10 p.m., down from 879,000 the week before, when it aired at its usual 8 p.m. ET slot. Heroes followed the season ender of 24, which, with 1.1 million viewers, lost to CTV’s Dancing with the Stars with 1.9 million.
A repeat of Global’s House on Tuesday at 9 p.m. got the better of the premiere of On the Lot, drawing 1.1 million versus the average of 666,000 who watched the movie making reality on CTV.
However, few House fans stuck around to watch the premiere of Global’s homegrown series The Best Years at 10 p.m., which managed 346,000 viewers in the timeslot formerly held by The Gilmore Girls.
On Wednesday, a conflict between the finales of ABC’s Lost and Fox’s American Idol forced CTV to break the former into two, one-hour eps, which drew 911,000 viewers at 7 p.m., up to 949,000 viewers at 10 p.m. The two-hour ender of Idol, in which 17-year-old Jordan Sparks was crowned the winner, aired intact to 2.6 million in its 8 p.m. timeslot, peaking at 3.4 million viewers.
Idol was also the most-watched of the night on Fox, where it grabbed 30 million viewers, according to Variety.
