Away from Her making gains

Sarah Polley’s Away from Her cracked Canada’s top 10 list as it gained steam in its second week, expanding to 23 screens and taking ninth place for the frame ending May 17.

The picture has been cheered by critics on both sides of the border — a ‘triumph,’ says The New York Times, ‘gracefully wrought,’ echoes Variety — and last week saw a per-screen average of $7,800, bringing its total so far to some $372,000 for distributors Mongrel Media and Capri Releasing. The film is carried by Lionsgate in the States, but receipts for its second week were not available at press time.

The number one film, also in its second frame, was Sony’s Spider-Man 3, which made another $7.1 million, followed by Fox’s new arrival 28 Weeks Later, at $1.3 million, and the Universal drama Georgia Rule, which earned just over $1 million. The other new release, the comedy The Ex, handled here by Alliance Atlantis, debuted at seventh place with roughly $284,000.

Away from Her also topped the list of Canadian-made titles, unchanged from last week, with the persistent A vos marques… Party! at number two for Christal Films, followed by the eco-docs Sharkwater and Un fleuve humain and the drama Ma fille, mon ange.
