Quantel’s GE

Quantel’s mantra for its new workflow management system is ‘same time, same media, different suites.’

‘Customers want choice,’ said Steve Owen, Quantel’s director of marketing, at NAB2007, adding that the inspiration for Genetic Engineering is the concept of mapping the genes and DNA of post-production workflow. To that end, GE promises to eliminate unwanted post-production ‘genes’ to improve efficiency, and is likened to a ‘gene pool with instant sharing.’

It’s also guaranteed to play back in 4K, provide resolution coexistence and generate copies on the fly. FotoKem in Burbank beta-tested the workflow system, and in February linked its four 4K digital intermediate suites together, allowing other systems in the DI pipeline to access the same media.

‘We can scan, dustbust, conform, grade, film out and work simultaneously on several machines and never need to move media or manage multiple copies,’ said Bill Schultz, SVP and GM, FotoKem Digital Film Services, in a statement. ‘It’s a quantum boost to efficiencies in time and space.’

On the broadcast side, Quantel announced Newsbox HD, the tapeless news system ‘in a box,’ to list at the same price point as the SD version. ‘HD is the future of news,’ said senior product manager John Woodhouse. ‘Every single Newsbox we ship is HD capable. Whether [customers] choose to use it is up to them.’

The new version will allow broadcasters to modify servers, seats, storage, i/o, etc.

Quantel also announced a new media asset management system for Enterprise sQ and Newsbox HD systems called Mission.
