Nomadic wins big at Rosies

Busy Calgary prodco Nomadic Pictures picked up seven Rosies at the 33rd annual Alberta Film and Television Awards, which on Saturday handed out prizes in 50 categories in Edmonton.

Nomadic’s Alberta-shot western mini Broken Trail, which aired on AMC, scored four awards: best overall sound (Michael Playfair), costume design (Wendy Partridge), special effects (Leo Wieser) and production design (Ken Rempel).

Meanwhile, the prodco’s thriller I Dream of Murder, for Lifetime, won best drama over 60 minutes, while Bridget Durnford and Craig Wrobleski took best editor and cinematographer, respectively, for Murder.

Wrobleski also took home the Rosie for cinematography on a drama under 60 minutes for Joe Media Group’s Whistler Opening, which also won best editor for Ken Filewych. Joe Media’s information show Fixing Dinner — Meeting in the Middle was awarded Rosies for best lifestyle series, and garnered best non-dramatic screenwriting for Neil Fleming and Sandi Richard.

In the acting categories, best performance by an Albertan went to Shaun Johnston for his role as Captain Fancher in the drama September Dawn, from Calgary’s Voice Pictures, while actress Teneil Whiskeyjack was honored for her role in the ep ‘Tyson Saves the Day’ from the APTN series Hank William’s First Nation.

Best drama under 60 minutes went to Rant — Little Darlins from Edmonton’s Hired Gun Productions, while Homefront, from Reel Girls Media, was awarded best doc over 30 minutes.

Other winners were Citytv Calgary and Citytv Edmonton for best news information series and best news feature, respectively, while the Rosie for best documentary/reality series went to The Rig — Gone Fishin (Part One).

The awards are presented by the Alberta Motion Pictures Industries Association.
