Alliance Atlantis and its sister, Odeon Films, dominated the box office last week, thanks to Anthony Hopkins and the antics of small-town English cops.
The thriller and Hopkins vehicle Fracture was the number one film in Canada for the week ending April 26, grossing $1.6 million, for a per-screen average of nearly $7,000. Paramount’s Disturbia ended its second week in second place, followed by the debut of the U.K.-made comedy Hot Fuzz, handled here by Odeon. Fuzz made just over $1 million and scored a high per-screen of $8,800.
Both debuts played better in Canada than in the U.S., where Fracture trailed Disturbia and Hot Fuzz placed sixth, behind the month-old titles Are We Done Yet? and Meet the Robinsons.
Sony’s Vacancy debuted at number five in Canada, while Warner Bros. and its drama In the Land of Women arrived in eighth place.
Among Canadian-made titles, the rankings are unchanged from last week. Christal Films and its teen comedy A vos marques… Party! hung on to number one after four weeks, taking another $127,000, followed by Sharkwater from Alliance and Young Triffie from TVA Films.
After four weeks on screens, the doc Radiant City, carried by Odeon, appeared on the domestic chart at number four, followed by the drama Ma fille, mon ange, which, after 10 weeks in Quebec theaters, made a comeback at fifth place. The French-language thriller has made $2.6 million since its debut earlier this year.
