Teletoon has struck a series of deals that will see its shows and brand carried on video-on-demand and wireless, starting with the Shaw and Rogers cable systems.
Making its first foray beyond traditional broadcasting, the 24-hour cartoon channel says titles including Braceface and Di-Gata Defenders will be bundled into 10 packages for Shaw VOD subscribers, available Friday, and will also be seen on Rogers VOD.
Teletoon says its Shaw deal, which also includes Caillou, Gerald McBoing Boing and other programs for preschool- and school-aged kids, will expand to 20 bundles by the end of July.
The move, announced Wednesday, is part of a push into digital services by the channel, which is co-owned by Astral Media and Corus Entertainment. Teletoon has also agreed to provide some of the same cartoons to Telus Mobile TV starting in May, and has created two new positions among its executive ranks to work with new technologies.
Mary-Anne Taylor, formerly of Rogers, has joined Teletoon as its director of affiliate relations, while Natalie Langlois has been promoted to project manager for new business development.
‘Teletoon is up to the challenge of delivering our programming on a full spectrum of platforms,’ said president Len Cochrane in a release. The channel gave itself a facelift in March, creating a more hip appearance.
The channel says it will follow its expansion into mobile and VOD by selling full-length episodes and other content through its website by this summer. A spokesperson notes that much of the content comes from Nelvana and Cookie Jar, though some foreign titles will be carried too. New episodes will be added throughout the summer.
