Party time at Christal

Christal Films and its teen comedy A vos marques… party! shot across the $1-million mark at the box office last week, taking the top spot among domestic films and coming in just behind TMNT as the number 10 film overall in Canada.

Marques… party! made $555,000 for the week ending April 12, its second in theaters, for a grand total of $1.3 million.

New arrivals took a back seat to the Christal release, including the much-anticipated Young Triffie from first-time director Mary Walsh and TVA Films, and the drama Who Loves the Sun, also from Christal.

Triffie, which suffered from harsh reviews, played on 43 screens across the country, grossing some $66,000 and coming in third, behind the still-strong documentary Sharkwater. Who Loves the Sun, playing on only six screens but benefiting from good reviews and some aggressive online marketing efforts, made $23,800.

The biggest film overall for the week was Paramount’s Blades of Glory, still at number one after two weeks despite the much-hyped arrival of Grindhouse, carried here by Alliance Atlantis.

The joint effort by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriquez came in third in Canada, earning $1.6 million in a surprising loss to Blades and Sony’s Are We Done Yet? , though it managed to edge out the kiddie comedy Meet the Robinsons, to which it lost in the U.S.
