Portfolio invests in puppets

Portfolio Entertainment has picked up the rights to five preschooler programs by Radical Sheep Productions, including its signature series The Big Comfy Couch and Ruffus the Dog.

The deal — announced Tuesday by Portfolio and the Toronto puppet shop — covers the TV distribution, home video, non-theatrical and multimedia rights for Couch (100 x 30), Ruffus (26 x 15), the partly CG Amigo and Me (65 x 5), the poetry-flavored Panda Bear Daycare (26 x 15) and Land O’ Hands (50 x 4), a traditional puppet show set in prehistory.

It hands Portfolio the worldwide distribution rights for all five, barring The Big Comfy Couch in the U.S. and South Korea, where it is represented by Amity Entertainment and Kenny & Co. Entertainment, respectively.

In a release, Portfolio head Joy Rosen predicted ‘a very warm reception from international buyers’ for the preschooler series. ‘Radical Sheep is a top-notch producer and we look forward to building a long and prosperous relationship with them,’ she said.
