Irshad Manji will be on air on both sides of the border next month when Faith Without Fear — a documentary based on her book The Trouble With Islam Today — runs on both Global and PBS.
Produced by 90th Parallel Films and the National Film Board, the film follows the outspoken author to the Middle East and Europe as she speaks out against injustice and violence in the Muslim world. It is directed by Gemini-winner Ian McLeod (House Calls)
‘She has a strong point of view that’s very controversial… but a call for Islamic reformation is something that quite intrigued me,’ says 90th Parallel’s Gordon Henderson, who exec produces with the NFB’s Silva Basmajian. ‘We don’t shy away from strong opinions.’
It will air as part of a post-September 11 special on PBS. Henderson says he found out about the primetime series, America at a Crossroads, after he bought the rights to Manji’s book.
‘There were over 400 submissions and we kept making the short list until we found out that Faith made the schedule to air as part of that series on PBS,’ he says, adding that 11 films were picked overall.
Faith Without Fear premieres on PBS April 19 and on Global Television, Saturday, April 21 at 8 p.m.
