It’s been nearly six years since Canucks were first exposed to the foul-mouthed, pot-smoking trio from Nova Scotia on their upstart hit TV series on Showcase, and since then, Ricky, Bubbles and Julian have successfully conquered not only the tube, but now the big screen as well.
Their feature film Trailer Park Boys The Movie, distributed in Canada by Alliance Atlantis, took in nearly $4 million at the box office, and is set to hit DVD stores Feb. 20. The movie was also nominated for three Genies but it didn’t take home any hardware.
Loaded with special features, the DVD also includes a music video,
I Fought the Law by the Big Dirty Band, deleted scenes, alternate takes, lost interviews, and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie. Meanwhile, the seventh season of Trailer Park Boys debuts on Showcase April 8 at 9 p.m.
Playback caught up with the Boys, who dished on the new season, the crazy fans, and a potential sequel. Oh, and Ricky has some words for Jim Shaw as well.
What was the reception like to Trailer Park Boys The Movie?
Julian: Well, the movie was done in a way for first-time viewers to check it out and not get lost as to who the characters are. We’ve been going out and getting drunk and talking to a lot of fans… it was surprising to see how many women actually enjoyed the movie. Usually it’s the guys that come up wanting to talk about the series.
Any chance of a sequel?
Ricky: There’s always been talk about it; hopefully, if they want to come and document more of our lives with the big cameras, we’d be into that. We loved being movie stars.
Bubbles: I’d like to do another one, but I have a few demands this time… I want a bigger trailer, more free liquor, free food, and more money would be nice.
Why should fans get the DVD for Trailer Park Boys The Movie?
Ricky: It’s just a really good thing to watch when you’re drinking and smoking different types of things.
Julian: There’s lots of extra scenes and special features… all kinds of that crap.
Did the movie change the way you shoot the series?
Ricky: Not a whole lot. The movie was shot on film so it was a lot bigger cameras.
Bubbles: Yeah, the fellas just came with the fancy cameras and followed us around… I never know when they’re around… Julian signs the contract and he tells them they can come whenever they want.
What do you think of Jim Shaw’s stance that money spent on Canadian shows like Trailer Park Boys is a waste?
Ricky: It seems that in Canada we should be able to watch and say and do what we want. It’s just kind of shocking, I guess, based on our fan base and all the people that watch the show. He should have a more open opinion on what’s on TV and what’s not.
Speaking of fans, what’s the craziest thing a fan’s ever done or said to you?
Ricky: Somebody came up to us once and asked if we could take care of a little problem for him. He wanted us to kill his neighbor’s dog, which kept dumping on his lawn.
Julian: I get a lot of rum thrown at me… like purchased for me. I had one fan that sent me a lot of jewelry and gold rings once… it was kind of different.
Bubbles: One lady wanted me to sign her boobs! That was pretty crazy. Other than that, people just come up and say hi and give you free drinks.
How are you handling the fame? Does it ever get to be too much?
Ricky: It’s getting a lot harder to break the law. Everywhere we go, everyone knows us now… it’s kind of strange. You have to get used to it. Sometimes it’s good for business and sometimes it’s bad for business.
Julian: We live in Nova Scotia, so it keeps us grounded. We’ve been here all our lives so it hasn’t changed us so much. Things get a little different when we leave… we drink a lot more.
Bubbles: I quite enjoy it, but it’s kind of annoying now because everyone thinks it’s cool to haul shopping carts and fucking pawn them and there’s none left for me… but other than that it’s kind of nice.
What’s your favorite TV show?
Ricky: Probably Da Ali G Show… I’m surprised he wasn’t killed making Borat.
Julian: I don’t watch much TV actually… I’m more of a movie person. Especially in jail. You watch a lot of movies in jail.
Bubbles: I like The Littlest Hobo and The Beachcombers.
And your dream job?
Julian: I’d like to be a captain of a ferry boat.
Bubbles: I’d like to be a spaceman. But apparently your eyes would have to be a little better than mine. I’d love to have a fucking space suit… I’d wear it out all the time!
Ricky: Some kind of farmer I guess… a hydroponics farmer.
But don’t you do that already?
Ricky: If you can make just as much money legally, that would be good.
Can you give us a little sneak peak into the new season?
Ricky: We take on our biggest job of all time, and we actually have a bit of success for a change.
Julian: Yeah, I come up with a pretty good way of making some money… and we don’t get caught.
Bubbles: The two of them are up to their usual shit. I’m just trying to keep them out of jail mostly.
