Bruce McDonald came home from the Berlin International Film Festival a winner, having picked up the fete’s Manfred-Salzgeber Prize for The Tracey Fragments.
The prize is awarded to a film that ‘broadens the boundaries’ of cinema and was awarded on Sunday, at the close of the 10-day festival that this year also hosted such Canadian-made titles as Guy Maddin’s Brand Upon the Brain! and Sarah Polley’s Away from Her.
The Tracey Fragments stars Ellen Page (X-Men: The Last Stand) as a traumatized young girl searching for her missing brother.
Organizers in Berlin gave special mention for the prize to Happy New Life by Hungary’s Árpád Bogdán. Berlin’s top prize, the Golden Bear, went to the Chinese drama Tuya’s Marriage by Wang Quan’an.
