GPS meets Blackberry

Rogers Wireless and Research in Motion have linked arms on the latter’s latest Blackberry model, and plan to introduce a GPS-enabled handset to Canadian consumers early next month.

Waterloo-based RIM on Monday unveiled its Blackberry 8800, the latest in its family of gadgets, which will provide GPS-guided ‘turn by turn’ maps and directions for drivers and pedestrians. Similar to in-car GPS systems, the 8800s will feature full-color 3D moving maps, business listings and a guide to nearby Wi-Fi hotspots — functions engineered by California-based TeleNav and available to Rogers subscribers for a $10 monthly fee.

‘Our business customers are always looking for the latest in technology,’ said John Boynton, SVP and CMO of Rogers, in a release, ‘and with the new Blackberry 8800 they can get ahead of the competition and save time by having access to the latest in mobile innovation and email connectivity.’
