Following what she calls an ‘insightful meeting’ with Shaw Communications and Videotron, Heritage Minister Bev Oda will sit down with the chair of the Canadian Television Fund this week, still looking to prop up its sagging support among the rebellious cable companies.
Oda met with reps from Shaw and Videotron in Ottawa on Tuesday to address the crisis that unfolded when both abruptly halted payments to the fund. The cable outfits, which together contribute around $70 million annually, take issue with CTF’s structure and governance.
‘I understood that there have been concerns with the CTF for many years, and that those concerns of the private sector contributors have not been fully satisfied,’ said Oda in a statement.
Oda will take those concerns to CTF chair Doug Barrett later this week in a private meeting, according to her press secretary.
‘What will happen from there, we’re not sure,’ says Véronique Bruneau. ‘The minister wants to make sure that the CTF has the full picture.’ No other details of the meeting were available.
Oda last week signaled Ottawa’s support of the CTF when she announced the Conservative government’s renewal of $200 million in contributions over two years.
