Silent Hill scores on DVD

Silent Hill is continuing to make noise, this time in homes, where it has earned some US$11 million from the rental market since its Aug. 22 release on DVD – placing high on charts at Nielsen, Rogers and Blockbuster.

The horror – based on the popular video game series and shot in Ontario in 2005 under producer Don Carmody was also the top-selling DVD in the U.S. as of Aug. 27, slipping to number four by Sept. 3 behind new entries including Brother Bear 2 and The Sentinel.

Its home video take in the U.S., through Sony Pictures, stands at US$11.6 million, according to Variety. The distribution wing of Alliance Atlantis also shipped 200,000 units in Canada.

AAC execs were not available to comment on the disc’s fortunes north of the border, though Silent Hill topped the sales charts at Rogers and Blockbuster, and Nielsen VideoScan’s top 40 DVDs for the week ending Aug. 27.

The DVD, like the movie, is doing well despite poor reviews.

Dave Leon of the San Jose Mercury News says its extras ‘don’t amount to much,’ but concedes that it gives an ‘interesting look behind the scenes.’

The only extras are film previews and a six-part, one-hour-long, making-of documentary, the segments of which take viewers behind the scenes, examine the process of adapting a video game for the screen, as well as discuss the set design, casting, stunts and creature effects.

There are also cast interviews and conversations with screenwriter Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction) and director Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf). At one point, Avary discusses his attempt to stay true to the spirit of the game, while making the supernatural elements more believable.

Kevin Williamson of Sun Media says there is ‘loads of impressively detailed behind-the-scenes information, rendered pointless by the shoddiness of the movie.’

Silent Hill earned US$46 million in theaters, $4.2 million of it in Canada.

A BluRay edition of Silent Hill will be released in time for the holidays, according to AAC.
