Toronto the misunderstood

For its next doc, Elevator Films (Stupidity, Escape to Canada) is pointing a lens at the strained relationship between Canada and its largest city, and has been staging tongue-in-cheek ‘Toronto Appreciation Days’ for the upcoming Let’s All Hate Toronto.

And what better place to get material, than Alberta? Directors Albert Nerenberg and Robert Spence staged an appreciation day in Banff during its TV fete earlier this month, canvassing passersby for their thoughts about the center of the universe.

‘We’ve been constantly surprised,’ says Nerenberg, via e-mail from Banff. ‘People we expected to hate Toronto often loved it, and people we thought were positive about the city were often enraged.’

The CBC doc is also making stops in B.C., Edmonton, Calgary, the Northwest Territories and the Maritimes. Vancouver got ‘quite wild,’ says Nerenberg, when their antics eclipsed a less ironic demonstration for immigrant rights. ‘We got into a heated conflict with the organizers,’ he says. ‘But the police let us know that they supported us and we [were] welcome to stay.’
