Big sky country

Toronto – Originally set for January, the debut of the sci-fi toon Skyland has been pushed back over concerns that its ongoing production might not keep up with its broadcast schedule.

Teletoon ran a sneak preview of the 26 x 30 on New Year’s Eve and had planned to roll out the series Jan. 29, two weeks after its planned U.S. debut on Nicktoons. Both channels have now bumped Skyland to April.

A Teletoon spokesperson says the schedule was ‘too tight to maintain’ a rollout of the entire first season.

‘It’s a tremendous endeavor for television,’ says exec producer Vince Commisso, ‘so we’d rather take a little bit more time to make sure it’s right.’

Commisso’s 9 Story Entertainment is copro’ing Skyland with Method Films of France, contributing writing, English voices, storyboarding and post. The series, aimed at nine- to 14-year-olds, is set in a world of islands floating in the sky and uses a mix of hand-drawn, motion-capture, 2D and 3D animation.

Commisso says two eps are complete. Another three are in post and another eight are being animated. The writing and storyboarding for the entire 26 are complete.

Skyland has also sold to France 2, the U.K.’s ITV, ABC in Australia, Nickelodeon U.K., Spain, Germany, Latin America and elsewhere.
