Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger star in Brokeback Mountain, which leads all films with eight nominations at the 78th Academy Awards. Both actors received nods – Ledger for lead – as did the Calgary-shot film itself for best picture and Ang Lee for director. Alberta Filmworks was involved on the production.
Meanwhile, Capote, coproduced by Vancouver’s Infinity Features and shot in Winnipeg, is up for five awards, including best picture. Director David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence picked up noms for William Hurt for supporting actor and adapted screenplay for Josh Olson, while Canadian Paul Haggis is named in the best picture, director and screenplay categories for Crash, which is up for six trophies in total. Murderball, co-financed and distributed by ThinkFilm, is nominated in the feature documentary heat.
The nominations were announced on Jan. 31, with the awards gala slated for March 5 in Hollywood.
