Box office for domestic films continues to surge

When all the numbers were crunched, 2005 turned out to have the biggest market share yet for Quebec-made films at the province’s box office. Domestic product accounted for 18.2% of theatrical receipts in 2005, up from 13.6% in 2004.

The total local box office for Quebec films last year was $35.8 million (taxes included), up nearly 30% from $27.4 million in 2004, driven by the success of three titles that eclipsed the $4-million mark: the comedy-drama Horloge biologique ($4.3 million), the period drama Aurore ($5.3 million), and the year’s biggest domestic hit, family drama C.R.A.Z.Y. ($5.9 million).

But, as was the case throughout North America, overall film attendance in Quebec was down. The total take at the till in 2005 was $196.7 million, down 2% from 2004’s total of $201.6 million.
