See Jeff run

Toronto: Jeff Seymour has wasted no time. The body of The Eleventh Hour, his previous gig, was not yet cold nor stiff when CTV announced that his next project, the sitcom Jeff Ltd., had been added to the net’s 2005/06 slate. Shooting got underway this month around Toronto and Hamilton, ON, and, like its star and co-creator, is already moving fast.

The show is making the most of its miniDV cameras and a skeleton crew to shoot as many outdoor and location shots as possible, says Seymour.

‘I’m telling you, I barely have enough time to change between scenes,’ he says, laughing. The shoot is a lot lighter on its feet than most, which makes it easier to capture the spontaneity of comedy. ‘It’s a lot easier when we’re trying to match shots.’

Seymour gives much of the credit to DOP David Perrault (Get Rich or Die Tryin’, Degrassi: The Next Generation) and ‘two of the fastest directors in town’ – Steve DiMarco (Queer as Folk) and Ron Murphy (Train 48).

The series has Seymour as a slicker-than-spit ad exec who’s always on the make for fast money – taking on doomed-from-the-start gigs as a political consultant, fashion photographer, or anything else that smells like cash.

‘He’s always chasing the big fish, always looking for the big score,’ says Eric From, Seymour’s partner. Both write and serve as creative producers.

The pair met in L.A. in 1997 (Seymour dated From’s roommate, and later optioned one of his scripts) and have since written several projects together. Jeff Ltd. is the first to go to camera.

Both insist that the show is not an ‘office comedy,’ citing The Larry Sanders Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm and the get-rich-quickisms of The Honeymooners as inspiration.

They also brought in Steve ‘Red Green’ Smith as a script consultant. Perhaps an odd choice for a show so eager to come off as edgy and innovative, but Smith came highly recommended by Shawn Alex Thompson (Puppets Who Kill, An American in Canada). Thompson is From’s brother-in-law. Smith’s brother David, meanwhile, produces with Seymour and Colin Brunton.

The series also stars Inga Cadranel (The Eleventh Hour, Kojak), Jesse Bond (The Limit), Sam Tabar and Marnie Robinson (The L Word).
