CBC an election winner, but CTV has Jon Stewart

CBC came out as the ratings winner in the coverage of the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 2, with an average of nearly 820,000 (2+) viewers for The National between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., according to Nielsen Media Research, beating out Global Television, which had 797,000 viewers tuning into Global National at 11 p.m., while CTV drew 690,000 viewers for its news program at 11 p.m.

Most of CBC’s election coverage was done on CBC Newsworld, where an average of 400,000 viewers tuned in between 9:30 p.m. and 1 a.m., four times higher than a typical night, according to a CBC spokesperson. CTV also did well with its airing of a live one-hour episode of the satirical The Daily Show with Jon Stewart at 10 p.m., which attracted 801,000 viewers – 110,000 more than its late-night newscast.

CBC has been known to garner high ratings with elections. During the federal election in June, CBC beat out CTV, according to Nielsen numbers.
