Vancouver: Force Four Entertainment begins three weeks of production in the farmlands of Abbotsford, BC Oct. 14 on the CBC MOW A Love Story before moving production in November to Chandigarh in the Indian province of Punjab for two more weeks.
The $3.7-million production, which is also known as Murder Unveiled and will likely go through another name change, is a tragic Punjabi love story inspired by actual headlines. In the story, a Canadian Punjabi woman travels to India and falls in love with a man outside her caste, defying her orthodox family who takes out a contract to kill her.
Chenier Hundal (Pink Ludoos) and Anita Majumdar star. Vic Sarin (Deluxe Combo Platter) directs and Lawrence Collett (Little Criminals) is the production designer.
Because of funding regulations, only 25% of the shoot and spend can be outside Canada, says producer Hugh Beard, a situation that has created a creative, logistical and technical nightmare for the production. Scouting secured exterior locations in the Punjab, which were recreated somewhat here so that accompanying interiors could be shot entirely in Canada. It makes for challenging continuity and audio, says Beard.
Hiring the all South-Asian cast was also a challenge, he notes, with Sarin traveling to London on the eve of production to cast the last key roles.
Beard’s Human Cargo collaborators Brian McKeown and Linda Svendsen wrote the script.
For the CBC miniseries Human Cargo, Force Four shot in Vancouver and South Africa. Force Four also produced the Jinnah on Crime South Asian detective MOWs.
