* CBC’s head documentarian Mark Starowicz, creator of The Journal and executive producer of Canada: A People’s History, has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

* Joanna Miles is the new sales manager on the distribution side at Capri Releasing. Miles steps into the newly created position after a seven-year distrib stint at Alliance Atlantis.

* Liz Janzen, ex of CTV and WTN, is the new director of programming at the National Screen Institute in Winnipeg.

* Jennifer Collins has been appointed to the newly created position of managing director for the Canadian Film Centre’s Worldwide Short Film Festival. Collins, previously volunteer coordinator at the festival, will oversee the day-to-day operations and administrative duties of the festival.

At the same time, festival director Shane Smith moves into the role of artistic director for the festival. Smith will focus on expanding programming streams, training and strengthening ties with the worldwide short filmmaking community.

* Pierre Curzi is now president of the board at Fonds d’investissement de la culture et des communications, a venture capital fund specializing in the cultural and communication industries in Quebec. Curzi is also president of the Union des artistes.

* The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television has named its 2004/05 board of directors. The directors and executive committee consist of Paul Gratton, chair; Rudy Buttignol, immediate past chair; Maria Topalovich, president and CEO; Bill Niven, vice-chair Eastern Canada; Trina McQueen, vice-chair Ontario; Guy Fournier, vice-chair Quebec; Terry McEvoy, vice-chair Western Canada; John Vandervelde, treasurer; and Ron Cohen, advisor to the board.

Branch representatives include Joan Hutton, cinematography; Sturla Gunnarsson, directors; and Marcia Martin for producers.

* The CFTPA has named Marc Seguin as its new senior policy director. Seguin previously worked in policy development at the Department of Canadian Heritage and Telefilm Canada.

* After trimming its staff, CHUM’s The New VI in Victoria is hiring – from the competition. Hudson Mack, a 19-year veteran at competing Global station CH Victoria, is joining New VI Sept. 1 as news director and news anchor of VI News @ 5PM. His first newscast is Oct. 11.
