Arcand, Carrey get named on Walk of Fame

Jim Carrey, Denys Arcand and singer John Kay were among the Canucks who saw their names written – not in lights, as per usual – but in hefty slabs of granite at the June 23 gala for Canada’s Walk of Fame. The annual glitter fest added 11 famous names to the sidewalks of Toronto, planting the trio’s stars alongside those of Shirley Douglas, Diana Krall, Mario Lemieux, Helen Shaver and Hollywood pioneers Louis B. Mayer, Mary Pickford, Mack Sennett and Jack Warner.

The stars line the sidewalk in front of Roy Thomson Hall, where Arcand’s Oscar-winning The Barbarian Invasions opened the Toronto International Film Festival in 2003.

‘It’s a coincidence, or maybe more than a coincidence,’ Arcand told reporters, his wife and producer Denise Robert on his arm. ‘This is the end of the road for me, the end of a perfect year… And, as a failed hockey player, it’s a dream come true to be next to Lemieux.’

Carrey, born and raised in nearby Newmarket, showed up with 18 family members, including his teen daughter Jane. He was originally nominated for the Walk in 1998, its inaugural year, but was unable to attend the ceremonies.

‘I couldn’t have done it without you,’ he told the cheering crowd. ‘You go away, off into the world… but when I come back here there’s a feeling of lightness, a feeling of home.’
