Queer as Folk, Slings and Arrows and Made in Canada led the way as the Writers Guild of Canada announced this year’s nominees for the Canadian Screenwriting Awards.
Queer as Folk and Slings and Arrows each have nominations for three episodes in the drama series category. The Queer writing credits are shared among Michael MacLennan, Ron Cowan, Daniel Lipman and Shawn Postoff, while the cited Slings scripts were all penned by Susan Coyne, Bob Martin and Mark McKinney. Da Vinci’s Inquest, The Eleventh Hour and the recently canceled Blue Murder trail with two nominated eps each.
In the MOW and miniseries class, the nominated scripts are from the MOWs Agent of Influence by Ian Adams and Riley Adams, Fast Food High by Tassie Cameron and Jackie May, The Investigation by Bruce M. Smith and The Many Trials of One Jane Doe by Karen Walton.
The comedy and variety section is heavily weighted toward Made in Canada, which grabbed seven of the nine nominations. Ed Riche penned three of those nominated eps, with Alex Ganetakos and Mark Farrell having written a pair each. Mental Block was the only series to grab two noms in the youth category, for eps written by Leila Basen and David Preston, while Yvon of the Yukon leads in the children’s and preschool category with four, divided among scribes Suzanne Bolch, John May, Victor Nicolle and Dennis Heaton.
Finally, under documentary, two parts of To Kill or Cure, written by Josh Freed and Jon Kalina, and two eps of Turning Points of History penned by Christine Nielsen are nominated. The full list of nominees is available on the WGC website at www.wgc.ca.
The event, formerly dubbed the Top Ten Awards, will be held April 19 in Toronto, and will be hosted by ubiquitous actor Sean Cullen.
