Spider weaves strong per screen

It probably won’t oust Daredevil or Chicago from the box office Top 10 anytime soon, but David Cronenberg’s Spider bowed to strong numbers in the U.S. and Canada following its Feb. 28 debut. Coming out of that weekend, the arty thriller with Ralph Fiennes and Miranda Richardson brought in a per-screen average of US$11,087, besting all of the U.S. wide releases. (Daredevil did US$4,099 and Chicago US$4,311.)

Spider debuted on 27 screens, in markets including New York and L.A. The only multi-screen release to outpace it was the documentary Amandala from Artisan Entertainment, which played on seven screens and brought in an average of US$12,241.

After its second weekend, Spider is playing on 35 North American screens, sitting at number 36 on Variety’s b.o. chart with a total gross of US$463,164.

North of the border, Spider’s first week brought in $204,093 on 22 screens in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver – averaging $9,276, according to English Canada distrib Odeon Films. Odeon says it is pleased with the film’s performance and plans a wider roll-out in the near future.
