Box office update

Montreal: In Canadian distribution news, Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm reports Ricardo Trogi’s road movie comedy Quebec-Montreal has earned just over $500,000 at the box office since its Aug. 2 release on 40 screens. AAV also reports the Denise Filiatrault family satire L’Odyssee d’Alice Tremblay has surpassed the $2-million mark after nine weeks in Quebec theatres. It’s an especially strong showing as 40% of admissions has been for children at reduced ticket prices.

Equinox Films reports My Big Fat Greek Wedding, starring Winnipeg’s Nia Vardalos, pulled in $3 million at the Canadian box office in its first 10 days of release. The comedy opened across Canada on Aug. 16 at 104 locations, generating a per theatre location average of $10,000 in its opening weekend.

Current and upcoming Canadian movie releases include Anne Wheeler’s Suddenly Naked (Remstar), starring Wendy Crewson; the Montreal World Film Festival opening night film, Manon Briand’s La Turbulence des Fluides (AAV), Sept. 6 on some 20-25 Quebec screens; and Louis Choquette’s mini-DV thriller Secret de Banlieue (AAV), which opens Oct. 4.

Soo Lyu’s low-budget Rub & Tug (Seville Pctures), starring Don McKellar, Lindy Booth and Tara Spencer-Nairn, preems Oct. 18 in Toronto and later in other cities, while Ronny Yu’s Formula 51 (AAC), previously The 51st State, starring Samuel L. Jackson, opens nationally Oct. 25.

Distrib Mongrel Media is slated to release the Matt Bissonnette and Steven Clark feature debut Looking For Leonard, starring Molly Parker, Kim Huffman, Joel Bissonnette and Ben Ratner, on Oct. 18. Deepa Mehta’s Bollywood/Hollywood (Mongrel Media), starring Rahul Khanna and Lisa Ray, is scheduled to hit theatres Oct. 25.

The theatrical release date for the Toronto International Film Festival’s opening night film, Atom Egoyan’s Ararat (Odeon Films), is still officially two months off, on Dec. 6. The distrib has not announced a release date for David Cronenberg’s Spider or for the Bruce McDonald noir thriller Picture Claire, which preemed at TIFF2001.

Vivafilm’s next major Quebec release is Charles Biname’s Un Homme et son peche, Nov. 29.
