2001 box-office summary

While French-language, Quebec-produced films had a strong year at the box office, close to the industry’s intermediate goal of 10% market share, English-language films have a long way to go to reach the 5% market share objective set by the CFFF.

According to data supplied to Playback by Canadian Heritage (compiled by the Motion Picture Theatre Associations of Canada), Canadian films, all categories, had a 1.45% share of the national box office in 2001, representing $11.8 million out of a total theatrical take of $816 million.

Canadian French-language films recorded a 9.8% share ($10.2 million) of the total French-language box office ($105 million) in 2001, while Canadian English-language films had a 0.2% market share (representing about $1.5 million in receipts) of the total English-language market ($710 million).

Heritage says the information will be posted on the department’s website in the next few weeks.

In the Quebec market, alexfilms.com reports Quebec-produced films had a 9% share (43 films with receipts of $9.9 million) of all French-language receipts, while films from France had a 7% share (71 films for $7.7 million). In both languages, foreign films other than U.S. and French films had a 19% share of the overall box office (82 films for $17.7 million), while U.S. films took in 75% of the total box office (206 films for $119.9 million). The total box office for 423 films released in the Quebec theatrical market in 2001 is $159.4 million (67% French).
