AAC wins record seven Emmys

Alliance Atlantis Communications’ Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows was second only to The West Wing in total wins at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Toronto-based company proved that it is an international leader in miniseries production, amassing all seven of its Emmys for Life With Judy Garland and Nuremberg (a copro with Montreal’s Productions La Fete.

‘It feels great that out of the nine Emmys given to miniseries, seven were won by us,’ says Peter Sussman, AAC president of television production. ‘It feels good to be so relevant. It allows us to strut a lot more, and with strutting comes selectivity and discipline. Now the quality of the projects that are available to us increases.’

Life With Judy Garland received the most awards out of any miniseries or movie. It picked up five Emmys including: outstanding lead actress in a miniseries or movie, for Judy Davis; outstanding supporting actress in a miniseries or a movie, for Tammy Blanchard; outstanding costumes for a miniseries, movie or a special, for Dona Granata; outstanding hairstyling for a miniseries, movie or a special, for Andrea Traunmueller; and outstanding makeup for a miniseries or movie, for Pamela Roth.

Nuremberg collected two awards: outstanding supporting actor in a miniseries or movie, for Brian Cox, and outstanding sound editing for a miniseries, movie or special, for Tattersall Casablanca Sound and Picture.

‘I’m satisfied about Nuremberg because it aired in July 2000,’ says Sussman. ‘That it was still in people’s radars so long after the fact, that’s a real comment on how well people embraced the film.’

AAC entered the twice-postponed awards show, held Nov. 4, with 26 nominations including 13 for Life With Judy Garland and four for Nuremberg.

Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil scored three Emmys this year for its television special Cirque du Soleil Presents Dralion. It won outstanding variety, music or comedy special; outstanding directing for a variety or music program, for David Mallet; and outstanding costumes for a variety or music program, for Francois Barbeau.
