Montreal: Henry D. Winterstern, an acquisitions advisor to Capital Communications CDPQ, a Caisse de depot et de placement du Quebec investment subsidiary, and president of Montreal investment firm Winterstern & Associates, has joined the board of directors of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
Parallel to Winterstern’s nomination with the Santa Monica-based entertainment company, CDPQ announced it had made a US$100 million equity investment in MGM (NYSE: MGM).
The two announcements are not formally tied, but Winterstern says ‘the Caisse has a comfort level with my position on [MGM’s] board and they [the Caisse] are trying to develop a strong relationship with me and through me with MGM.’
Last fall, Winterstern brokered an unspecified CDPQ equity investment in Mosaic Media Group, one of the production partners on the big-budget John McTiernan action film Rollerball, filmed on location in Montreal last summer and fall. Winterstern is also a member of Mosaic’s board. MGM is the film’s North American distributor.
Winterstern was directly introduced to MGM’s senior management through Mosaic, he says. ‘It was at that point I was invited to sit on the board and subsequent to that the Caisse decided to enhance its relationship with MGM.’ *
