Canada @ Cannes, the international symposium that connects producers, financiers and entertainment executives from all over the world with Canadians as production partners, returns to the Cannes Film Festival & Market this year for its third event.
To be held mid-festival on Sunday, May 13, the forum features keynote remarks from celebrated Canadian producer Roger Frappier. He has screened several films at Cannes, including Jesus of Montreal, which won the Jury Prize in 1989; Sous-sol, which unspooled in Critics Week in 1996; Cosmos, part of the Directors Fortnight in 1997; and August 32nd on Earth, which in 1998 was selected for Un Certain Regard. The festival also accorded Frappier its Hommage aux Producteurs award in 1998.
The Canada @ Cannes agenda will include a case study of a film coproduced by Canada and a foreign partner. Event co-founders Debbie Nightingale and Alison Emilio say, ‘the producers will take the stage for an in-depth analysis of the steps they took to bring the project to fruition in the international marketplace.’ Entertainment lawyer David Zitzerman, a partner at Goodmans Law, based in Toronto, will moderate.
Intended to attract non-Canadian production partners and inform them on the latest news in coproducing with Canadians, the event is expected to attract about 200 invitation-only attendees to the Gray D’Albion hotel, with a reception to follow on the beach.
