* Andre Barro (Insectia) has joined Montreal’s Cineflix Productions as executive producer – vice-president, effective at MIP-TV in April. Barro comes to Cineflix from Pixcom, Montreal, where he was VP international affairs and executive producer.
* Ron S. Bremner has been appointed chair of Telefilm Canada’s audit and finance committee, replacing Elvira Sanchez de Malicki, who will remain a member of the board.
* Claude Chamberlan, programming director at Ex-Centris and rep house Cinema du Parc and codirector of the Montreal International Festival of New Cinema and New Media, has been named programming consultant for the International Critics Week section of the Cannes International Film Festival. Chamberlan will act as the section’s Canadian point man.
The program is dedicated to young and emerging filmmakers.
* After signing on as a director one year ago, Hugh McKinnon is the new chairman of the board at Rainmaker Entertainment Group in Vancouver.
Previously, McKinnon was the president of Okanagan Skeena Group. He replaces former chair Stuart (Tookie) Angus who, while remaining a Rainmaker director, now becomes a partner at law firm Faskin Martineau & DuMoulin.
* Sue Prestedge has been named senior VP of WSN, a Category 1 digital licence set to launch this September.
A former CBC Sports broadcaster and TSN sports commentator, Prestedge will oversee the day-to-day operations of the world’s first 24-hour national network devoted to women’s sports.
* Susan Bower has been appointed COO of the Vision TV group of channels. The former VP of finance and administration, Bower will be in charge of internal operations, acting as deputy to the president and CEO, and leading the strategic direction-setting with the board of directors.
Alberta Nokes, a former director of communications for the company, has been appointed the new VP of communications.
* Pim van der Toorn, former production manager on CBC’s Canada A People’s History, has been appointed head of documentaries, Barna-Alper Productions.
* Award-winning journalist Kate Wheeler has joined CTV flagship station CFTO as the new daytime anchor of CTV Newsnet.
CFTO reporter Andria Case will leave her role as entertainment reporter to become primetime weekend anchor of CFTO News.
* The North American Broadcasters Association has elected Mexican broadcaster Jose Ignacio Suarez Vasquez as its new president.
Andy Setos, executive VP News Technology Group and senior VP broadcast operations and engineering at Fox Broadcasting, and Peter Smith, VP, technical planning and engineering at NBC, were named VPs of the association.
