Vancouver: Television anchor Kevin Newman will host Global Television’s new 30-minute national newscast from Vancouver’s bctv studios beginning in September.
Most recently, the 41-year-old Toronto native has been the substitute anchor and correspondent for abc’s World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. Newman was also a cohost for abc’s Good Morning America and a senior correspondent for Nightline with Ted Koppel.
Newman has covered a wide range of domestic and international events, including elections and political campaigns, the death of Princess Diana, the Olympic bombing in Atlanta, the Gulf War, and Papal visits to Cuba, the u.s. and Canada. He has also interviewed such high-profile figures as Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela, George Bush, Jimmy Carter and Lech Walesa.
Newman recently received the 2000 Peabody Award for abc’s millennium coverage and a 2000 Emmy Award for outstanding news and documentary program achievement.
Newman’s broadcasting career began at Global in Toronto in 1981. Before leaving for American television, he worked for CTV National News, cbc’s The National and CBC Midday. •
