$5M in venture funds for Kaydara

Montreal: Investissement Desjardins, Mouvement Desjardins’ venture capital arm, has made a $5-million investment in Montreal 3D/2D production software company Kaydara.

The financing will be used for new product development and marketing, says Kaydara president Michel Besner.

Founded in 1993, the company is an established name in the animation sector and presently holds about 80% of the international motion-capture market. The process is used to ‘capture’ and convert live-action images into computer code for the purpose of animating a computer-generated character. The system has been used in the production of the choreographed action scenes in the blockbuster movie The Matrix, for animation series such as Starship Troopers and Action, and in video games.

Kaydara’s flagship software product, FilmBox, is used to create, import and export 3D digital data/content in various media in real-time.

Besner says the company’s goal is to become ‘the defacto standard for character-based content creation and delivery across the entire range of digital media.’

Kaydara has more than 300 clients in 30 countries. •
