Street Cents casts eye at International Emmy Award

An International Emmy Award is considered one of the world’s most prestigious awards for excellence in television programming, and not only has cbc’s Street Cents received a nomination in the children’s and young people category, it is the only 100% Canadian program on the list.

Street Cents, produced out of CBC Halifax, helps young consumers make purchasing decisions, presenting the information through comedic skits and advertising parodies. The nominated episode is last season’s ‘Wide Open.’ It dealt with issues including growth hormones, homeless teenagers, gender stereotypes in advertising, family friendly shows, young entrepreneurs, and buying dog biscuits.

The Canada/u.k. coproduction Magician’s House from Vancouver’s Forefront Entertainment and London’s Kudos Productions in London is also in the running for an International Emmy in the same category (see B.C. Scene, p. 46).

International Emmys, presented by the International Council of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, recognize the best in television programming produced outside the u.s. The 28th International Emmy Awards will be presented in New York City on Nov. 20. *
