An article in the Oct. 16, 2000 issue of Playback (nabet entices spot shops with ëpre-ratified’ pact) referred to what was described by NABET 700 local officials as aggressive raiding one year ago by rival iatse around the time that the local was placed in trusteeship by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada. The story included a statement that ‘Eventually, hundreds of the 920 to 950 members deserted to ia’. This statement was based upon estimates given to Playback by sources believed to be credible. However, Playback is unable to independently verify the number of members who did leave the nabet local and joined iatse and therefore retracts this statement in full.
This story also stated that ‘the subjective criteria which made membership a contentious issue in the past have been discarded in favor of objective rules’.
Playback has also been unable to verify that the membership criteria in
existence prior to the trusteeship were in fact subjective in nature and therefore retracts this statement in full.
The same story indicated that ‘some film and tv technicians reported paying thousands in permit fees without securing a union membership card and the fringe benefits such as retirement savings contributions and vacation pay the card affords its owners’. The emphasis in this sentence should have been placed upon the fact that some technicians could not obtain membership. It was not meant to state that permittees who paid thousands of dollars were unable to secure the ‘fringe benefits such as retirement savings contributions and vacation pay the card affords its owners’. They were unable to obtain the membership status which carried with it various fringe benefits, such as eligibility for extended medical and dental coverage, which were not available to permittees. Whether or not one was a member, he or she did always receive the same rrsp contributions and vacation pay.
The same story indicated that at the time of the trusteeship, NABET 700 was îa local in disarrayî and that a trusteeship was imposed îto sort out the mess.î Playback has been unable to independently verify these statements and therefore retracts them in full.
Playback regrets any confusion that may have arisen from its making of the foregoing statements and apologizes to the local managers of NABET 700 in office prior to the trusteeship.
