MIPCOM welcomes newbies

This year’s edition of MIPCOM, running Oct. 2-6 in Cannes, will see an increase of 14.5% of participating companies, with 2,131 compared to 1,862 last year.

Exhibiting companies this year total 1,074, up 10.6% from last year’s 971.

As launched at this year’s mip-tv in April, the coming market will, for the first time, offer space in the Azur Village for new media companies, further enhanced by MipNet, a three-day series of conferences looking at the future of television in the new economy, set for Oct. 2-4.

Among the many dot-com companies holding stands in the Azur Village, dottv (www.tv), the worldwide source for Web addresses ending in .tv, will showcase at mip for the first time.

The domain name has already been adopted by more than 150 leading companies from around the world, including Columbia TriStar International Television, Carsey-Werner Company, The Emmy’s, Granada Sky and pax tv.

.tv is the domain indicator assigned to Tuvala, a small Pacific island nation. Through an agreement that pays Tuvala $4 million annually for the next 10 years, dottv became the exclusive registry and registrar for names in the .tv domain.

Most .tv addresses are available for an initial annual registration fee of $50, while generic names, like business.tv and news.tv are available by auction.

Recently, the Toronto-originated company announced that free.tv, china.tv and net.tv have each sold for initial annual registration fees of $100,000. *
