Montreal: The nfb animation short film Le Chapeau has been selected for screening as part of the International Critic’s Week program at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival, May 10-21. (www.onf.ca)
Guylaine Dionne’s low-budget short has been selected for the Director’s Fortnight while the new Denys Arcand movie Stardom has been selected to close this year’s edition.
Directed by experimental filmmaker Michele Cournoyer (Old Orchard Beach, p.q.; Dolorosa, Une Artiste) using a stark black ink on paper technique, Le Chapeau opens in a strip bar where the sight of one man’s hat provokes a dancer’s memory of sexual abuse as a small child.
Le Chapeau was produced by Therese Descary and Pierre Hebert of the nfb’s French animation studio in Montreal and is entered in official competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, June 5-10.
