Last year was an unremarkable year for Canadian independent production, with overall 1999 figures from Playback’s annual survey pointing to a minor rise in volume. However, the big winners were animation, documentary and mows/miniseries, each of which experienced a marked rise.
With increases over the previous year of $112 million, $30 million and $27 million, respectively, animation, documentary and mows/miniseries were the big movers.
Toronto and Montreal continue to dominate the production landscape, with seven of the top 10 companies calculated by volume based in one of the two population centres.
