Canucks up for Globes

The nominees for the 2000 Golden Globes include productions from Rhombus Media and Alliance Atlantis Communications, as well as a boxer’s story from Canadian director Norman Jewison. Rhombus is up for best foreign-language film for its multi-Genie-Award-winning The Red Violin.

aac’s miniseries Joan of Arc is nominated for best miniseries or made-for-television movie, best actress in a miniseries or mow for Leelee Sobieski, and for best supporting actor in a series, miniseries or mow for Peter O’Toole. Jacqueline Bissett was also nominated for best supporting actress in a series, miniseries or mow for her work in Joan. Mia Farrow is running against Sobieski for the best actress prize for her work in Forget Me Never from aac’s Citadel Entertainment.

Canadian Film Centre pioneer Jewison received a nod for his directorial work on The Hurricane, which was also nominated for best dramatic film.

Meanwhile, The Red Violin has also picked up a Grammy nomination for best instrumental composition written for a motion picture. The score was composed by John Corigliano and released by Sony Classical. Up against A Bug’s Life, Life is Beautiful, Shakespeare in Love and Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace, The Red Violin is the only Canadian film competing in the category.
