Shaw Cablesystemsis to expand its ppv service to provide 50 extra channels to its digital cable customers.
In an effort to triple its monthly inventory of ppv services, the Calgary-based firm has invested more than $7 million for phase one of its national server-based distribution network.
As the new channels are added, subscribers can choose from up to 50 new Hollywood blockbuster films and high-profile special events. Some channels will offer up high-definition tv. Others will include letter-box versions of theatrical releases, multi-language programming and children’s/youth features.
The augmented ppv service will be rolled out across Canada, starting with Calgary (where it is now in test mode), from January to June, 2000, confirms Peter Bissonnette, president, Shaw Cablesystems.
Programming will be provided by Viewer’s Choice, which typically shows four new movies a week.
Shaw digital cable services and its ppv channels reach almost 1.8 million Canadian homes.
