CanWest files WIC-split app to the CRTC

CanWest Global has submitted its application to the crtc for approval of its acquisition of WIC Western International Communications. If the wic deal is approved, CanWest will acquire all its conventional tv assets, as well as its interest in robtv, making it Canada’s third national broadcaster; Shaw Communications will acquire wic’s distribution businesses, including its 54% interest in Cancom; and Corus Entertainment will take all of wic’s pay and specialty services and radio stations.

The application is still scheduled for public hearing in April 2000.

Acquisition of the wic stations at this time will place Global in a position to prepare for a group licence hearing a year from now.
