Motion top line nears $145M

Montreal: Motion International (Coscient Group/cst.a) reports top-line revenue for fiscal ’99/2000 is slated to hit $145 million, a 25% increase over last year. The revenue projection includes current and confirmed production and foreign and domestic distribution sales.

Motion says it has already signed production agreements totaling $95 million for youth and animation programming, international drama and products for the Canadian market, $87 million of which will be produced in the period ending July, 31, 2000.

These agreements represent 1,235 half-hour television programs for Canadian and foreign broadcasters, in addition to 150 live stage performances in Canada.

Highlights include:

* Confirmed youth and animation production of $21.5 million, including $20 million slated for this year, representing a 27% increase over last year.

The slates include one animated feature, six coproduced animation series and six youth and children’s series, including Les Debrouillards, Dans une galaxie pres de chez-vous, Bonjour Madame Croque-Cerise, and the French-track remake of the former Owl kiddies series Hello Mrs. Cherrywinkle, Popular Mechanics for Kids, Rockabye Bubble and YAA! To The M@x.

* Confirmed international drama productions total $31.5 million, including $25 million this year, one-third of all of Motion production.

International production titles include Little Men, a franchise acquired this year from Alliance Atlantis Communications currently filming on location in Toronto; the Euro-comic book based series Largo Winch; The Passion of Henriette; The Collector; and Stilletto Dance.

Motion is negotiating international production worth an additional $15 million and projecting $40 million in this category this year, a 64% hike over last year.

* Production for the domestic tv market is projected at $42 million and includes the youth street drama tag; Haute Surveillance; Task Force and two popular teleromans, Sous le Signe du Lion and Allo Docteur.

Motion will begin filming on Dr. Lucille, a tv movie coproduction on the life of Dr. Lucille Teasdale, with Ballistic Pictures of South Africa on location in South Africa from Oct. 16 to Nov. 28. George Mihalka is directing. Marina Orsini (Les Filles de Caleb) plays Dr. Lucille and Claude Bonin is producing. Andre Picard and Francine Allaire are the exec producers. The $4.8-million English-track movie has been presold to ctv and Reseau tva.

Motion’s foreign and domestic distribution sales are being pegged at $43 million for ’99/2000.
