After screening 403 submissions, breaking last year’s record of 366, Perspective Canada 1999 programmers underwent the arduous task of selecting 19 features, 37 shorts and one gala to unspool at tiff.
Shorts made a major jump over last year from 277 submitted in 1998 to 320 for this year’s fest while the number of features stayed relatively the same, going from 89 submitted last year to 83 this time around.
Ontario filmmakers made up the majority of films submitted with 221 titles, Quebec follows with 64 and British Columbia had 53 films competing for a spot. Seven submissions came from Alberta, six from Nova Scotia, Newfoundland submitted four, Saskatchewan had three, seven came from the u.s. and 30 were international.
Perspective Canada marks the world premiere for 13 features including Four Days, Full Blast, A Girl Is A Girl and The Life Before This. Nine of the features are directorial debuts and 15 of the directors, including Jerry Ciccoritti, Allan Moyle, Lea Pool and John Paizs, have had films in tiff in the past.
