CBSC reprimands Park

Despite a woman’s allegation that the repeated killing of Kenny on South Park, broadcast on cict-tv (Global, Calgary), is harmful to her son who bears the same name, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council says the animated series is not gratuitously violent. The Prairie Regional Council considered the complaint under the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ Violence Code and ruled that the running spoof is not ‘harmful to children’ and, furthermore, the program is ‘not children’s fare.’

In a ruling related to a report, aired on cict, on a stabbing in a park in High River, the prc found the tv station in breach of the cab Code of Ethics, as well as the Radio Television and News Directors’ Association Code of (Journalism) Ethics. The ruling was based on unsubstantiated allegations that the crime may have been drug related.

Finally, the Ontario Regional Council finds the tv version of the film Strange Days, broadcast on chch-tv Hamilton, gratuitously violent against women. The ruling followed complaints by viewers who were shocked by what they felt was ‘nothing short of a pornographic movie.’ Complaints were considered under provisions of the cab Violence Code.
