Poptronik Incorporated, a recently launched film, tv, multimedia and music company in Toronto, is in late development on a slate of feature films and an Internet game.
Producer/writer Mike Garrow, who heads up the motion picture department, is in the final stages of development on Harry’s Boat, a comedy caper; Too Much Sky, a mythological urban drama; and Route 66, a pseudo documentary-style action comedy.
Harry’s Boat, written by Garrow, has picked up final draft scriptwriting money from the Harold Greenberg Fund. Based on a true story, the film follows an English mp and a petty thief who get mixed up in a botched robbery, an insurance scam and alleged sex with sheep, which leads to a political mix-up and all sorts of scandal. A u.k. coproducer is being sought, as is a director. Story editor and associate producer is Ken Chubb (producer of Angel in a Cage) and the coproducer is Martin Harbury, one of the producers on the David Milgaard Story.
Too Much Sky, written by Maristella Roca and to be directed by Ines Buchli (a Canadian Film Centre alumnus and ofdc Calling Card recipient) follows an eccentric family uprooted from their native Italy and transplanted to northern Canada. The screenplay has picked up Greenberg Fund financing. With a budget of $2 million, Garrow is seeking an exec producer for the project.
Route 66, penned by Garrow and Keith Davidson, is a tangled web of robbery, kidnapping and singing cowboys.
Broadcast licences are being sought for On The Edge, a $100,000 documentary exploring the extreme sport of base jumping in which daredevils jump off towering buildings with a single parachute and have eight seconds of fall time to open them. The doc was shot around the world by avid base jumper Mike Williams.
Poptronik’s multimedia side, headed by Martin Best, utilizes 3D animation and graphic design to create Internet applications. Poptronik is currently developing a sci-fi Internet role-playing game. Telefilm Canada has provided $75,000 through its new media fund to develop the project.
The company also provides audio composition and sound effects for multimedia productions and game development, as well as sound production and soundtracks for motion picture projects. Its music division, helmed by Hugo Bugg, is also a record label distributed nationally through Oasis Entertainment.
