Montreal: The Elvis Gratton sequel, Miracle a Memphis, a Pierre Falardeau comedy coproduced by acpav and Cinepix, has reached the $3.7-million level at the box office. The film was released by distrib Films Lions Gate on 90 screens July 1.
The distributor has the top two Quebec theatrical releases this year, both comedies. Melenny Productions’ Les Boys ii, coproduced by Films Cinepix and directed by Louis Saia, pulled in close to $5.5 million in its late ’98/99 run and is ordained to take both the Golden Reel (Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television) and Bobine d’Or (Prix Jutra) box-office prizes.
Elvis ii now moves into third spot on the all-time Quebec movie box-office money list, following Les Boys I & II (total take between late ’97 and early ’99, over $11 million) and displacing the Robert Menard comedy Cruising Bar, which had receipts of $3.4 million.
Other top-ranked Quebec box-office winners (from data complied since 1986) include Le Declin de l’empire americain ($3.4 million) and Jesus de Montreal ($3.1 million), both from director Denys Arcand, Denise Filiatreault’s C’t’a ton tour Laura Cadieux ($2.5 million) and Alain Chartrand’s tres nutty comedy Ding et Dong, le film ($2.3 million). Rounding out the top 10 are J.C. Lord’s family film La Grenouille et la baleine ($1.8 million) and the George Mihalka comedy La Florida ($1.2 million).
