* Brian Freeman has been named creative head of movies and miniseries at the cbc. This position has been vacant since the death of Jim Burt in January. Freeman joined cbc’s movies and miniseries team in 1994 and has held the position of executive in charge of production since 1996.

* As part of ongoing changes at WIC Western International Communications in Vancouver, Roy Gardner has been promoted to national vp of programming, an expansion of his former duties as longtime vp of programming for bctv and chek-tv. In his new role, he will oversee the programming schedules for all nine of wic’s stations. Gardner will be based out of bctv in Burnaby, b.c.

* Vern Freedlander has taken over the position of supervising director of Global News. Freedlander comes from ctv, where he worked for 15 years in various capacities. He is replacing Terry Lewis, who has been promoted to Global’s news special productions manager.

* At the Canadian Journalism Foundation’s second annual awards gala, Bernard Derome, longtime anchor of Le Telejournal, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Maclean’s magazine was recognized for its excellence in journalism.
