Bereaved Families sets sail on second fireworks boat cruise

When Spain takes over the sky at the Benson & Hedges Symphony of Fire in Toronto, the sangria will be flowing on this year’s Bereaved Families of Ontario boat cruise.

The Latino-themed cruise will feature Spanish dancers and sets sail at 7:30 from the Toronto Islands ferry dock on Thursday, July 8.

Last year’s Japanese cruise raised $8,000 for the charity; this year organizer and MacLaren McCann account director Rachel Fox is aiming for $12,000.

*Heslip jumps to Imported

After two years on the roster at Toronto’s Blink Pictures, director Dale Heslip has joined Imported Artists.

Heslip has been directing for around seven years and recently shot spots for Nike featuring the Toronto Raptors.

Angel Gracia joins Imported for exclusive Canadian representation. Gracia started off his career with a best student Oscar for his 1987 experimental film The Three Cornered Hat and his work on Madonna’s True Blue video earned the director an mtv award for best music video. Commercial work includes spots for Coca-Cola, Sega, Ericsson, Enigma, mtv, and a recently wrapped job for Caramilk out of Leo Burnett, Toronto.

Gracia is currently in preproduction on pms, a feature film he cowrote and is planning to shoot in New York this winter.

Marni Luftspring, formerly at Navigator Films, is the new sales rep at Imported.

*Spy adds Billy Kent

Spy Films has added New York-based director Billy Kent to its roster. Kent attended the American Film Institute in Hollywood and has a number of short films under his belt, including Egg Salad, Thread The Needle and Slice of Life, which have screened at Sundance as well as festivals in Monte Carlo, Seattle, Chicago and New York.

Since launching his commercial career around six years ago, Kent has shot spots for Ikea, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Pepsi, Nescafe and Burger King.

Kent is repped by Crash in the u.s.

*Van Rijn returns to Shooters

Allan Van Rijn has rejoined the roster at International Shooters following a short stint with Imported Artists. The rsa usa director was head of production at bbdo in the Netherlands for eight years. He kick-started his directorial career around 10 years ago with beer and automotive spots and since has shot spots for Visa, Budweiser, Nike and Reebok.

*CFC in the fall

Vancouver’s Aviator Pictures director Keith Behrman, part of the Rudy Hawk directing duo with Steve Cosens, has been accepted as a resident director at the Canadian Film Centre, starting this fall.

Behrman is working on a second draft of his first feature Flowers and Garnet, which was workshopped at cbc’s Arts Performance Showcase last month.

*New digs

Stealing Time is moving from its Richmond Street locale to bigger digs at 488 Wellington Street West, Suite 400.

Mark Hajek, Greg Edgar and Alex Eaton along with the rest of the post crew will be in their new home as of June 28.
