AAC, New Line renew

Montreal: Alliance Atlantis Communications and New Line Cinema have renewed their 10-year-old output agreement to the year 2002. The agreement with New Line, a Time Warner company, completes aac’s principal renewal requirements and follows the late March announcement that the company had extended its output deal with Miramax Films to the year 2005.

The agreement gives aac all media rights in Canada to motion pictures from New Line and Fine Line, an estimated 25 to 30 titles annually.

Jim Sherry, vp and gm of Alliance Atlantis Releasing, says New Line is more ‘a mainstream commercial supplier’ while Fine Line is an art film distribution boutique.

‘We are opening Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me [June 11] with the widest release in the company’s history, which is 500 screens,’ says Sherry.

Upcoming aar releases of New Line and Fine Line product include Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean; The Astronaut’s Wife, starring Johnny Depp (Aug. 21); Trick; Detroit Rock City, a wide release set for mid-August; Lost Souls, a horror suspense starring Winona Ryder, scheduled for October; The Bachelor (Nov. 12); Town and Country, featuring Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn (Sept. 17); Boiler Room, an action film starring Ben Affleck; and at least two holiday releases, Tumbleweeds and Magnolia, a Paul Thomas Anderson film starring William Casey and Tom Cruise.
