Violin heads up Jutra list

Montreal: Francois Girard’s The Red Violin tops all films in the first edition of Les Prix Jutra with 11 nominations out of a possible 12, followed by Denis Villeneuve’s Un 32 Aout sur Terre and Manon Briand’s 2 Secondes, each with seven, and Robert Lepage’s No and Denise Filiatreault’s C’t’a ton tour, Laura Cadieux, each with six.

Red Violin (Niv Fichman, Danny Iron – producers), Un 32 Aout and 2 Secondes (Roger Frappier) and No (Bruno Jobin, Robert Lepage) are nominated for best film.

Much to the consternation of producer Richard Goudreau, box-office hit Les Boys ii has been shut out except for two performance nominations for Marc Messier and Remy Girard.

Grand Nuit du Cinema, the organizing body for Les Prix Jutra, reports 1,475 nominations ballots were filed out of a possible 5,000. Guy Latraverse (Sogestalt 2001) will produce the Prix Jutra gala, to be broadcast live March 7 on Reseau tva. Mouvement Desjardins has signed on as the event’s principal sponsor, with additional funding from the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications, sodec and Telefilm Canada.
